The Challenge
As part of a global benchmark study, Lumivo collaborated with leading sports organisations to evaluate the digital fan experience across 26 clubs from 11 European football clubs and five other sports, including the NBA, MLB, and AFL. The objective was to identify best practices, assess the effectiveness of online platforms, and pinpoint opportunities for improvement in driving fan engagement, satisfaction, and commercial success.
This case study focuses on the NBA, which emerged as the top-performing league in the benchmark, particularly highlighting the digital offerings of the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors. The study explored key elements such as matchday and non-matchday content, club shops, and membership experiences, comparing these against global sports clubs to determine best practices and actionable insights.

Key Findings
1. NBA’s Dominance in Digital Fan Engagement:
The New York Knicks scored first globally for overall fan experience. Their app, built on the NBA template, offered exclusive content, live scores, detailed player information, and a robust matchday centre with play-by-play stats and game trackers.
84% of users expressed satisfaction with the Knicks’ statistical content, outperforming all other clubs globally.
2. Matchday Centre Excellence:
The Golden State Warriors excelled in clarity, while the Knicks led in metrics such as helpfulness and success, with 78% rating their matchday content as highly engaging.
Features like the "Game Tracker" provided interactive visualisations and real-time play details, setting a high benchmark for fan engagement.
3. Shop Performance:
The Golden State Warriors shop ranked first for ease of purchasing, offering features like free shipping, shop-by-player options, and new arrivals.
The Knicks shop, powered by Fanatics, also performed strongly, featuring extensive memorabilia options, signed merchandise, and detailed filtering options for seamless navigation.
4. Membership Appeal:
The Knicks topped the rankings for ease of discovering and understanding membership options, showcasing personalised benefits and clear subscription tiers.
Users appreciated the clarity and value provided by the Knicks’ membership programme, which significantly enhanced fan loyalty.
5. Global Comparisons:
NBA platforms consistently scored highest in satisfaction with stats, with teams like the Boston Celtics also surpassing 80% satisfaction.
In contrast, NRL sites/apps scored the lowest for satisfaction with statistical content.
